The house
On the corner, cut into the stone, is 1904. The house turns onto the square: yellow plaster, a black iron balcony, a small dome above the corner. It was built at the start of the twentieth century, with arched windows and moulded plaster, in the manner of the new houses then going up in Tiflis.
The restaurant is this house. Inside, the rooms stay rooms: lamps, a long table, Georgian cooking from the oven and the fire, wine poured at the table.
The lane was once Mughni Street, after the Armenian church of Surb Gevorg a short walk away. It now carries the name of the poet Beglar Akhospireli. When the city repaired Gudiashvili Square, it found that the houses here stand on older ground, with cellars from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The lanes were then closed to cars. The last steps are on foot, across the cobbles, to the yellow corner.
The way in
The house is at 1/3 Beglar Akhospireli Street, beside Lado Gudiashvili Square. In 2020 the city repaired the square and the lanes around it and closed them to traffic. The last part of the way is on foot, between the old houses.
Ask the taxi for Lado Gudiashvili Square. The driver stops on the street outside. From there you walk into the quiet part. Liberty Square metro is a short walk away.
